Whether you are considering a breast uplift, cosmetic eye surgery or a tummy tuck, you may be wondering how quickly you will heal following your procedure. The good news is that thanks to advances in cosmetic surgery, most procedures require less healing time or downtime than ever. Even better news is that there are a number of things you can do to speed up the healing process without discomfort or risk.
Listen to your surgeon’s advice
Nobody understands healing times better than your surgeon. By listening to their aftercare instructions you give yourself the best chance of not only healing quickly but healing safely with minimal discomfort.
Have patience
You may be eager to remove your dressings to see the results of your procedure, but patience is key during the first stages of the healing process. Bruising, swelling and skin discolouration are all normal after surgery and need to be treated with great care. Resist the urge to take a peek, unless your surgeon has said it is OK to remove the dressings.
Take things easy
Stress and strenuous exercise can negatively impact the healing process. Your surgeon will give you advice on how much you can do, but it is likely they will simply tell you to relax and abstain from any sporting activities until you are fully healed. Listen to your body and relax during this vital part of your aftercare. Reading, yoga and listening to relaxing music can help to reduce stress levels.
Protect your body from the elements
Exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can cause skin discolouration and damage around the site of the incision. Avoid direct exposure to the sun by wearing a sunscreen of SPF30 or more, wearing sunglasses or covering affected areas. Also, avoid harsh and bitter winds, smoke, dust and other pollutants while you are healing.
Drink lots of water
Water helps to keep the body healthy and is essential for new cell generation and healing. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
Watch what you eat
While the body is healing, it needs additional calories and protein. You can increase your protein intake by eating foods that are rich in vitamin C and vitamin A. Try to get these vitamins from natural foods, such as fruit and vegetables. Check with your consultant before taking supplements, as some can actually slow the healing process.
Avoid alcohol, drugs and tobacco
Alcohol can suppress the immune system and make it more difficult for your body to heal. It also has a dehydrating effect which in severe cases can lead to bleeding. Smoking and even exposure to second-hand smoke can prevent your cells from getting the oxygen they require to heal.
If you are in any doubt that your body is not healing as it should following a procedure, contact your consultant immediately for advice.
